What did a ten-year-old named Tom teach me?

Years ago a ten-year-old boy, named Tom, taught me a valuable lesson.  What was the lesson?  Don’t worry, I’ll tell you the story; it’s a good one.

In the past I worked as a camp counselor in the beautiful states of Colorado, South Dakota, and California.  In fact, it was during my first night as a camp counselor when Tom taught me the valuable lesson.  Let me explain.  I was lying awake late at night with a cabin full of sleeping ten- and eleven-year-old boys.  The cabin was silent except for a few random snores.  That’s when I heard Eric say, “Tom, Tom, are you awake?”  Tom replied, “Yeah, I’m awake.”  Then Tom and Eric began visiting.  They talked about all the things ten-year-olds care about—video games, sports, and even girls.  Then Eric said something I will never forget.  “You know, Tom,” said Eric,  “I feel like my life’s a puzzle.  All the pieces are together, but there is a missing piece.”  (Wow, this statement caught my attention!)  Then Tom replied, “Eric, do you know what that missing piece is?  That missing piece is you.  You are the missing piece.”  In those simple words ten-year-old Tom unveiled one of the greatest keys to happiness and fulfillment.  Even if we surround ourselves with worldly riches, we will not be truly happy until we know ourselves, or as Tom put it, “find our missing piece.”

We each have our own journey to "find the missing piece."   At times we think the "piece" is in a new car, sport, job title, book, or other person.  Only to later realize that the "missing piece" is not "out there," but rather it is "right here."   Just as Tom said, "That missing piece is you."  There are many journey's in life.  One of the most exciting and meaningful is the journey within.  Safe Travels!©
