Where It All Began

JASON C STEINLE, DC

Sit still!  Stand up straight!  Don’t wiggle!  Do you remember hearing these statements as a kid?  I certainly do.  Then we then enrolled in school and were required to sit in a desk for seven hours a day.  These desks were all the same size, and yet, Sally, you, and I had completely different body types.  So what happened?  We began to go numb.  We ignored our bodies.  We became asleep and disconnected from our bodies.  This disconnection progressed as we grew-up.  As adults we are bombarded with even more ways of disconnecting.  Whether it takes the form of a muscle relaxer the day after we overdid it, a heart burn pill after eating six bowls of raging red chili, or watching televised sports every night instead of playing a pick-up game at the gym, our society provides endless means of “tuning out” our bodies.  At the extremes of disconnecting, our nerves can be cut, or we can have entire body parts removed.

So while society has made it easy to disconnect, we are now learning the grave dangers of doing this.  When we ignore our bodies’ natural movements, impulses, and rhythms, our bodies respond by “speaking” louder and louder to grab our attention.  For example, a businessman may work day and night for weeks, even months, completely ignoring his body’s call for rest, nutrition, and movement.  He is able to ignore his body only so long before his body grabs his attention.  A nervous breakdown or an extreme fatigue may force him to take time off from his busy schedule.  Many in the health profession see the rise of fatigue, chronic diseases, and cancers as resulting from this disconnection with our bodies.  After years of being ignored our bodies try to “grab our attention”—these illnesses may be the way they do it.

So what can be done to reverse or prevent this process of disconnecting from occurring?  The answer is to maintain our connection, or if we are disconnected to reconnect.  Chiropractic and yoga are two systems that help people connect to their bodies and lives once again.  This is a major point because many disciplines focus on making us more numb, asleep, and dead to life.  At Health and Harmony, PC our focus is never to make us more numb, but instead to make us more alive, awake, and vital.  The chiropractic care we offer releases tension from the nervous system moving it from a state of “defense” into a state of “growth.”   And for those who are still connected—as many children are—our care helps to keep that connection even as more expectations, responsibilities, and other ways of disconnecting are introduced into daily living.

Remember, our bodies can be our friend or foe.  We can ignore our bodies, which leads to frustration and discomfort, or we can connect to our bodies to help prevent future illness.  And more importantly, we can connect to our bodies to increase the quality of our lives. ©
